Working with the media is an effective way to spread the word on energy efficiency and ultimately change people's perspectives on their energy use. That is why EECCHI collaborates with various media in Jakarta today in our Energy Efficiency Media Workshop, held this morning at Hotel Park Lane, Jakarta.
The workshop was attended by seventeen print media who were keen on learning more about energy efficiency, not only from the obvious cost saving and environmental perspectives, but also from real life stories of how people do it every day. To share their interesting take on energy efficiency, EECCHI invited notable speakers who practice green and love to talk to their thousands of twitter followers on their green lifestyle. In her presentation "Savings Through Energy Efficiency", Ms. Ligwina Hananto, a financial consultant, public speaker and CEO of QM Financial, shared how saving energy means reducing household expense (which makes up to 40% of monthly expense), thus increasing monthly savings by 10%. She said that people are reluctant to save or set aside their money, thus saving energy is one easy way to save.
Another interesting story was shared by Andira, a top broadcaster from Hard Rock FM and also an avid cyclist, who decided to build a Zero Emission House. He shared his ultimate vision to be completely off the grid by adding more solar panels for his house. Complete with energy efficient passive design that optimizes natural ventilation, daylight and harvest rainwater, his house saves 3777 kg CO2 per day!
Known for his witty and motivating speech, Career Coach and motivational speaker Rene Suhardono, talks about how we need an Energy Efficient Generation. Shedding a light on how habits form characters, he challenged everyone to change the false mindset that energy is limitless and cheap, instead the ability for us to tap energy is limited thus the price continues to hike.
The testimonial session ended with Nadine Zamira Syarief, Miss Indonesia Earth 2009 who is also an environmental consultant, showing how eco-conscious consumers have the power to change the market. She said that buying power is like a vote, and we can all vote for energy efficient products as a form of sustainable consumption. After all, Nadine said, the root of all environmental problems today is our consumptive behavior, so we have the responsibility to consume responsibly.
The Media Workshop was also attended by Rana Yusuf, Core Founder of Green Building Council Indonesia, who equates energy efficiency in building as a hidden treasure that we need to exploit. In his presentation "Energy Efficiency in Green Buildings", he shared case studies of successful green buildings such as PT Dahana Building and Menara BCA who became the first certified green buildings in Indonesia.
While Maryam Ayuni, Director of Energy Conservation of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, shared interesting statistics such as how energy efficiency can ensure that the 33% of Indonesian people who currently have no access to electricity can finally enjoy electricity, in her presentation "Energy Efficiency Policy in Indonesia." Ohter interesting trivia and numbers can be found in the Introduction to Energy Efficiency and Guess The Numbers Game by Melany Tedja (EECCHI).
The Workshop is closed with the Launch of Media Writing Competition, where the winner will get an iPad2 from EECCHI. More information on the competition will be posted soon.
